Intelligent creation of indoor / outdoor living using Passivhaus principles

This beautiful arts and crafts building boasts a wealth of stunning, crafted features. The homeowners wanted to update the kitchen space so that it worked for their family lifestyle and improved the connection between the house and the garden.

Keen to explore a contemporary design we created a bespoke and crafted extension to the kitchen that echoed the attention to detail present throughout the property. With a focus on sustainability, we used a mixture of materials to exploit the low-level light from the west facing garden to create an inviting indoor / outdoor living space.

Location: Donnington Square, Newbury

Materials: The design creatively brings together a mixture of materials including exposed steel, brick and timber panelling.

Clever aspects: To counteract the low-level sun from the west facing garden, we designed a canter levered roof for the extension to avoid overheating from excess solar gain. Providing sunshade to the bi fold doors the roof allows for maximum light whilst offering shade to the peak sun.
