Contemporary, energy efficient new build with traditional country house design

This newly completed project involved the demolition of a modest farmhouse and the construction of this substantial family home over three floors. Our brief was to create a Victorian Vicarage, fit for the present day, that stood handsomely in beautiful gardens. With the installation of an air source heat pump heating system, solar roof panels and the incorporation of an intelligent lighting system – Blue Tongue created an exemplary energy efficient and modern home whilst retaining the elegant appearance and proportions of a traditional country house.

Location: Plastow Green, Headley, Basingstoke

Materials: This build is all about the quality of materials with authentic traditional detailing. Bricks were carefully selected with bonding patters, quoins and diaper work and decorative work carefully detailed.  Traditional joinery has been carefully designed to enhance the exteriors. The interior of the house has been updated throughout in a timeless classic design and is a fully accessible design that is future proofed for our clients.

Clever aspects: Securing planning consent for a much taller and larger dwelling. Adapting traditional details where necessary to create Passivhaus level thermally efficient details and junctions.

Friends on the project: Blue Tongue Construction were the contractor for the project. Kirsten Coltart provided the kitchen.

We love: Demonstrating that a handsome traditional house can be designed to Passivhaus principles.

Sustainability/Eco elements: The house is constructed to Passivhaus fabric first principles with super insulated thermal performance and a ground source heat pump with bore holes. PV panels are concealed on a high level roof.
